I still remember standing in the hospital corridor after the doctor spoke. It felt like every door ahead of me closed at once. No plan. No direction. Just the weight of knowing my kids needed me, and I had no idea how I’d manage.

My name is Howard. In 2020, my wife passed away unexpectedly, and I became a solo father to five kids, aged 2 to 11. One of them lives with Type 1 Diabetes.

A few days after the funeral, COVID hit. The world shut down. In a strange way, it gave me space to focus only on my kids. But when life reopened, the pressure came back fast. Work. Expectations. The feeling that I had to prove I was coping.

I tried pushing harder. Working more. Holding it together.
It didn’t work.

What actually helped wasn’t hustle or motivation. It was learning how to slow things down, make clearer choices, and stay steady enough to show up for my kids with more calm and less noise in my head.

That’s why I started Present Dads, a space for single dads that are seeking presence over perfection.

This isn’t about fixing yourself or becoming a better version overnight.
It’s about being more present in the moments that matter, even when life is messy, loud, and exhausting.
