Discover the key lab tests every woman should know to identify Hashimoto’s. Understand what each test measures, why it matters, and how much it typically costs without insurance in the US. Plus, learn where to get these tests done even if your doctor is hesitant. Empower your healing journey with knowledge and practical tips.

This is the one your doctor often measures, so I would not spend money on it. Measures how much your brain is signaling your thyroid to work. High TSH can indicate an underactive thyroid, a common feature in Hashimoto’s. Typical cost: $30-$60. Can be done at most private labs like Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp even without insurance or doctor referral in some cases.

This is the test doctors always check, so you are probably able to check through your doctor if you mention you have hyper or hypothyroid symptoms.

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Represents the storage form of thyroid hormone. Low Free T4 can signal thyroid dysfunction. Typical cost: $50-$100. Available at major labs; some direct-to-consumer testing services also offer this. You might be able to get your doctor to check it if you tell them you are experiencing symptoms like hair-loss, brittle nails, brain fog, etc.

Your doctor might agree to check it if you report ongoing symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Free T4 (Thyroxine)

The active thyroid hormone that your cells use. Low Free T3 can explain persistent symptoms despite normal TSH. Typical cost: $60-$120. Obtainable at specialized labs and some online lab test providers. A lot of conventional doctors refuse to get this test.

Conventional doctor is unlikely to want to check, but you can try.

Free T3 (Triiodothyronine)

Detects immune attack on thyroid tissue, confirming autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s). Elevated antibodies signal ongoing inflammation. Typical cost: $60-$130. Often available at private labs and through online labs. Also a hard one to convince your doctor to re-check, since they mostly do it to confirm antibodies.

If you have already been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, your conventional doctor is unlikely to want to check.

Thyroid Antibodies (TPO & TgAb)

Includes Vitamin D, Selenium, and other nutrient tests that support thyroid health and immune balance. Costs vary widely, typically $40-$100 each, available at major labs or direct-to-consumer services. Tell your doctor you are having symptoms of deficiencies like hair loss, brittle nails, brain fog, etc to try to convince them to check them.

Your doctor is likely to ask for it, so you might not have to pay for it.
