What is Human Papillomavirus?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is among the most common viruses affecting humans and is the most widespread sexually transmitted infection in the United States. It impacts countless men and women annually. Indeed, HPV affects men as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly every sexually active adult will contract HPV at some point. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, primarily during sexual activities.

How Does It Become Cervical Cancer?

Ninety-one percent of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV. However, not all HPV infections lead to cancer. Only a few of the 100+ known HPV strains have the potential to become carcinogenic.

Most infections show no symptoms and are naturally cleared by a strong immune system! However, when the immune system is compromised, or when a potent HPV strain invades, abnormal cell growth can occur. This could lead to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and eventually, cancer.

Is There a Cure?

The short answer is no. There isn't a complete solution to eradicate HPV or reverse all damage. However, outcomes for HPV and cervical cancer are favorable with regular screening and informed treatments.

How Can We Naturally Respond to HPV?

There are various ways to address symptoms and complications of HPV naturally, including genital warts and cervical dysplasia. The two most popular treatment options are Cryotherapy and LEEP.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze abnormal cells from your cervix. It is also a common wart removal method. This treatment kills cancerous cells, allowing healthy cells to grow.

How it works: Like a Pap test, you'll lie down, and your doctor will insert a speculum. Instead of using a brush, a cryoprobe will freeze the cells on your cervix. The entire process takes about 5 minutes, and you might feel a cold sensation or mild cramping.

The result: Cryotherapy is effective in eliminating abnormal cells with a low recurrence rate.

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

LEEP is another cervical cancer prevention treatment where a small electrical wire loop removes abnormal cervical cells.

How it works: You'll be lying down as your doctor inserts a speculum. After numbing, a wire loop removes the cells. The loop's electricity cauterizes blood vessels to prevent bleeding. The process takes about 10 minutes.

The result: Highly effective, LEEP usually removes all abnormal cells. A study even showed LEEP was more effective than cryotherapy.

Other Treatments

  • Conization, or a cone biopsy, removes a cone-shaped section of abnormal tissue for lab examination.
  • Surgical removal, including electrocautery, laser surgery, and excision.
  • Photodynamic therapy, paired with Aminolevulinic acid, is a novel treatment gaining media attention as the “cure to HPV”. It uses wavelengths to damage HPV-affected cells, posing a lower risk for women wanting to conceive. However, further research is needed to assess long-term effectiveness.

It's important to consult with your doctor to determine the best treatment for your specific case.

Vaccination

An HPV vaccine exists that protects against two strains causing genital warts and two strains most commonly causing cervical cancer.

For effectiveness, the vaccine should be administered before contracting the virus, typically recommended for females aged 13 to 26 and males aged 13 to 21.

While the vaccine covers some high-risk strains, it does not protect against all HPV strains. Regular screenings remain essential.

Are New Vaccines on the Way?

A new immune-based vaccine has been developed, potentially effective for women with existing HPV and precancerous cervical changes.

This therapeutic vaccine stimulates the immune system to target high-risk HPV strains linked to cervical cancer.

In a trial, women who received the vaccine were more than twice as likely to see their CIN eliminated compared to those with a placebo.

Although promising, further research is required to establish long-term safety and efficacy.

Natural Methods to Fight HPV

Most HPV infections can be naturally cleared by a robust immune system. You can support your immunity through lifestyle choices such as:

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables – These foods are high in antioxidants and nutrients to maintain optimal body function.
  • Quit smoking – Smoking greatly increases HPV-related cancer risks. Quitting entirely is the best choice.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption – Excessive drinking can reduce immune function.
  • Drink green teaGreen tea has immune and anti-cancer benefits.
  • Exercise to sweat – It improves circulation and helps eliminate toxins.
  • Get adequate sleep – 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep supports immune function.
  • Keep a positive mindset – Positivity reduces stress, boosting your immune system.
  • Supplement your dietPapillex is a supplement designed to help both women and men naturally respond to HPV, supporting immune health.

Could Medicinal Mushrooms Be the Cure?

New research on a shiitake mushroom compound, Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC), shows promise in eradicating persistent HPV infections. Dr. Judith A. Smith conducted two small human trials finding daily intake of 1-3 grams of AHCC eradicated the virus in 44-66.7% of high-risk HPV patients after 3-7 months.

Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries to enhance immunity and combat viral infections. Learn more about AHCC for HPV. While results are promising, more research is necessary. Always consult a doctor before starting new supplements.
