You know, the best way to increase your salary is to become known for something.
You just don't want to be the CFO/Finance Leader.
You want to be the CFO that specializes in something.
• You want to be the CFO that specializes in scaling D2C brands.
• You want to be the CFO that turns around struggling companies.
• You want to be the CFO that’s a pro at leading M&A deals.
• You want to be the CFO who automates finance processes and saves millions.
• You want to be the CFO that builds high performance teams.
• You want to be the CFO that drives digital transformation in finance.
• You want to be the CFO that’s always one step ahead of market trends.
You see what I am stating? It’s not about having a title. It’s about owning a specialty that makes you stand out.
There are 3 things that happens when you do that.
1. You bring more value
When you specialize, you’re no longer just “another CFO.” You become the go-to person for a specific challenge or opportunity. CEOs and boards see you as a solution to a problem, not just a cost.
2. Your reputation travels faster
Being “the CFO who grows startups” or “the CFO who leads M&A” makes you memorable. People talk about specialists. And when decision makers need help, they reach out to the name they’ve heard before.
3. Demand Outweighs Supply
Specialized skills are harder to find. If you’re known for driving D2C growth or mastering digital transformation, you’re competing in a smaller, less crowded pool. This gives you leverage to demand higher pay.
A generalist CFO can be replaced with another generalist CFO. But a specialist? That’s someone who brings unique expertise, and that makes them indispensable.
You could be in early stage, mid stage of your career, but start right away to build some speciality. Be holistic to involve yourself everywhere, but ace something which no one else could do better than you. Something valuable to the decision makers.
Good luck.
