We live in a time where conflict around the world is occurring more often and for longer, which means it only becomes more important to understand why conflict occurs and how such violence can be prevented. While the distinct experiences of LGBT+ in conflict are not new, for a long time they have not been considered as part of understanding war. Often seen as niche or not urgent, LGBT+ issues have been sidelined despite them often being powerful predictors of future violence and crucial in addressing the injustices that drive conflict. In this talk, Detmer will discuss three core thematic areas where conflict and LGBT+ communities intersect 1. How homophobia, transphobia and other systems of exclusion make conflict more likely 2. How our identities shape how LGBT+ people experience conflict and attempts to resolve it 3. The unique roles our communities can play in preventing violence and building inclusive peace.
