This interview problem tests whether a candidate can efficiently process strings using prefix-based matching. Given a dictionary of root words and a sentence, the task is to replace words in the sentence with the shortest matching root.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Recognizing that repeated prefix checks call for a Trie or efficient hashing strategy

Avoiding naive substring comparisons that lead to poor performance

Explaining the trade-off between Trie-based and set-based solutions

Handling edge cases such as no matching prefix or multiple possible prefixes

A strong solution clearly explains how prefixes are matched, why the shortest root is chosen, and analyzes complexity based on total characters processed. Interviewers look for clean string traversal logic, correct data structure choice, and the ability to justify efficiency.

Replace Words with Prefix

This interview problem tests whether a candidate can simulate a non-trivial string transformation while maintaining clear indexing logic. Given a string and a number of rows, the task is to write the characters in a zigzag pattern and then read them row by row.

Translating a visual pattern into precise index movement

Managing direction changes (down vs up) cleanly

Handling edge cases such as one row or very short strings

Explaining time and space complexity clearly

A strong solution avoids building a full 2D grid and instead simulates row traversal directly. The expected complexity is O(n) time and O(n) space, and interviewers look for clear reasoning, careful boundary handling, and a clean mapping from pattern to code.

Zigzag Conversion

This interview classic tests whether a candidate can apply the sliding window / two-pointer technique to optimize substring problems. The task is to find the length of the longest substring that contains no repeated characters.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Maintaining a dynamic window with all unique characters

Using a hash map or array to track last seen positions

Correctly moving the left pointer to preserve the no-duplicate invariant

Explaining why each character is processed a constant number of times

A strong solution clearly explains the window invariant, updates pointers carefully, and runs in O(n) time with O(k) space, where 
k is the character set size. Interviewers look for clarity in pointer movement, correctness in handling repeats, and a convincing complexity argument.

Longest Substring Without Repeating Characters

This interview problem tests whether a candidate can recognize when different strings share the same underlying structure. Given a list of strings, the task is to group together those that are anagrams of each other.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Identifying the correct canonical representation for anagrams (sorted string or character frequency signature)

Using a hash map to group strings efficiently

Reasoning about time–space trade-offs between sorting-based and count-based keys

Clearly explaining why the chosen key uniquely identifies an anagram group

A strong solution explains the grouping strategy upfront, uses hashing to achieve O(n⋅k) or O(n⋅klogk) time (where k is average string length), and handles edge cases cleanly. Interviewers look for clarity in abstraction, correct complexity analysis, and a solution that scales well with input size.

Group Anagrams

This interview problem tests whether a candidate can optimize repeated string-constraint checks using frequency aggregation. Given two lists of words, the task is to find all words in the first list that satisfy every character requirement induced by the second list, treating requirements as minimum letter frequencies.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Recognizing that checking each word against every constraint word is too slow

Compressing constraints into a single “maximum required frequency” array

Efficiently validating each candidate word using character counts

Explaining why taking the max frequency across constraints is both necessary and sufficient

A strong solution builds a global requirement vector from the second list, then checks each word in the first list against it in linear time per word. The expected approach runs in O(∑∣Ai∣+∑∣Bj∣) time up to constant alphabet factors, with O(1) auxiliary space for fixed alphabets. Interviewers look for the key optimization insight, clean implementation, and a clear correctness argument.

Word Subsets

This interview staple tests whether a candidate can model a classic 2D dynamic programming problem where local choices compete. Given two strings, the task is to compute the length (and sometimes the sequence) of the longest subsequence common to both, without requiring contiguous characters.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Defining the DP state over prefixes: dp[i][j] for the best answer using the first i chars of one string and first j of the other

Handling the two competing cases when characters do not match (skip from one string vs skip from the other)

Explaining base cases and why the recurrence covers all possibilities without double-counting

Discussing time/space trade-offs and common optimizations

A strong solution clearly derives the recurrence, explains the “competing subproblems” idea (two valid ways to reduce the problem), and implements tabulation with 
O(nm) time. Strong candidates also mention reducing space to O(min(n,m)) with rolling arrays. Interviewers look for state clarity, clean transitions, and a convincing correctness argument.

Longest Common Subsequence (2 Strings)

This interview problem tests whether a candidate can reason about character counts and use them to construct the maximum-length palindrome. Given a string, the task is to compute the length of the longest palindrome that can be built using its characters, where each character can be used at most as many times as it appears.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Recognizing the core invariant: palindrome halves require pairs of matching characters

Correctly handling the center character (at most one odd-count character can contribute a single extra)

Using a hash map or fixed-size frequency array for efficient counting

Explaining time and space complexity clearly

A strong solution aggregates character frequencies, adds the largest even contribution from each count, and optionally adds one extra character if any odd count exists. The expected approach runs in O(n) time with O(1) auxiliary space for fixed alphabets (or O(k) otherwise). Interviewers look for crisp reasoning about parity, clean implementation, and correct edge-case handling.

Longest Palindrome Construction

This interview topic tests whether a candidate can match patterns within strings efficiently while understanding the trade-offs between naive and optimized approaches. Given a text and a pattern, the task is to determine whether (or where) the pattern occurs in the text.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Understanding the brute-force character-by-character matching approach and its limitations

Explaining why redundant comparisons lead to poor performance in naive solutions

Recognizing when advanced algorithms like KMP, Rabin–Karp, or Z-algorithm are needed

Clearly reasoning about preprocessing and how it enables faster matching

A strong answer explains the core idea behind optimized pattern matching: reuse previously computed information to avoid rechecking characters. Interviewers look for conceptual clarity, correct complexity analysis, and the ability to explain how preprocessing transforms matching from quadratic to linear time in the right scenarios.
