AquaTalks is a weekly series of web-based panel discussions on various aspects of aquatic livelihood. 
A series of panel discussions & webinars will be organized on various topics relevant to the sustainable development of aquaculture comprising the entire aquatic livelihood sector. 
These webinars will be convened by the Jaljeevika, in partnership with Government bodies, the private sector, investors, banks, academic institutions, and civil society organizations

In an era driven by technological advancements and environmental consciousness, the aquaculture industry has been at the forefront of innovation, paving the way for sustainable aquatic practices. AquaTalks is a pioneering online webinar platform that caters to the diverse spectrum of individuals passionate about aquatic innovation. It serves as a dynamic social hub where scientists, industrialists, farmers, FPO/SHG members, local entities, and students come together to engage in profound discussions regarding the latest developments within the aquaculture industry.

Small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture are important for strengthening rural livelihoods by providing food security, and employment for rural areas. The sector also contributes to the preservation of local biodiversity and conservation of aquatic resources and can aid in the development of rural communities by providing access to markets, financial services, and training opportunities.

Integrated farming of fish is a sustainable farming system that combines fish cultivation with other agriculture and allied activities, such as crops, livestock, and other animals to optimize the use of resources and increase productivity. Benefits include using waste as fertilizer, controlling pests and weeds, reducing feeding costs, and providing multiple sources of income for farmers.

Makhana is a potential aquatic crop native to Asia, known for its high protein, carbohydrates, and minerals. Cultivation is low-cost and suitable for small-scale farmers. Makhana is tolerant to various environmental conditions making it suitable for regions with water scarcity or poor water quality. Overall, Makhana is a potential aquatic crop that offers multiple benefits to farmers.

Another wonderful session completed on Aquatic Plant: S. articulatus with Dr. Vidyanath Jha, Principal, MLSM college, Darbhanga, Bihar on date 25.02.2022 A totally untouched topic. The session was eye opener about such valuable aquatic plants which are still not cultivated at commercial level and possess a lot of nutritional value. Heartful thanks to the guest speaker for taking this session Vidyanath Jha.

Nikita guided the fisheries with her experience how to move on forward in fish farming. The fishermen also narrated their entire fishing journey. International Women's Day was started by women from New York City for their rights. It was later officially recognized by the United Nations. It is these women who teach us to fight for our rights. On this day, women are honoured for their achievements.

Aquatic food crops like makhana, singhara, and lotus have the potential to contribute significantly to food security and livelihood generation. These crops can be grown in freshwater and brackish water, making them suitable for a wide range of growing conditions. They are rich in protein, carbohydrates, and minerals, making them valuable for human and animal consumption.

Makhana or fox nut is a light puffy white popcorn which is a highly nutritious food item. Makhana comes from the seeds of the prickly waterlily “Euryale ferox “the leaves and the flowers float on the water and the fruits are submerged in water. Maintaining a makhana farm involves several steps from planting to harvesting. Regular monitoring is essential for growth and productivity.

Farming and management of indigenous fish refer to the practice of raising and cultivating fish species that are native to a specific region or ecosystem. The goal is to promote sustainable and responsible use of these resources, while also supporting local communities and economies. This may include conservation of endangered fish species, and efforts to improve the productivity and profitabilit.

Fish waste utilization refers to using the by-products or waste generated from fish processing, farming, and fishing activities. Fish waste can be used for fish meal and fish oil production, fertilizer production, biogas production, and soap and cosmetics production. This not only helps to reduce waste but also can be environmentally friendly and economically profitable for the fish industry.

The low-cost fish feed can be prepared on the farm using locally available ingredients. The feed can be formed into small pellets or flakes for the fish to consume. However, it's important to note that nutritional requirements of fish vary depending on species, life stage, and water temperature. Preparing homemade feed can be a cost-effective way to raise fish on a farm.

The freshwater prawn-Macrobrachium rosenbergii is a commercially important species, a food item for local consumption as well as a valuable export product. Freshwater prawn farming can be conducted by unskilled rural people in small establishments and prawns are consumed domestically by all social classes. It is an activity that can play a role in poverty reduction and the empowerment of women

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are technology for cultivating fish, shellfish, and other aquatic organisms. They consist of tanks, filtration, and water treatment systems, to maintain appropriate water quality and recirculate it back to tanks. It provides the benefits of controlled water quality, the ability to cultivate aquatic organisms in areas where traditional aquaculture

Hygienic smoke curing is a method of preserving fish by exposing it to smoke from clean, dry wood or sawdust, which contains chemicals that inhibit the growth of bacteria and microorganisms. The process begins with cleaning, gutting, and salting the fish, and then exposing it to smoke for a period of time in a controlled smokehouse.

The Department of Fisheries Government of India implemented Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana – A scheme to bring about the Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of the fisheries sector in India. PMMSY is designed to address critical gaps in the fisheries value chain from fish production, productivity and quality to technology, post-harvest infrastructure and marketing

Ep-14 PMMSY Schemes on Freshwater Aquaculture

Value-added fish products refer to fish or seafood that has been processed or prepared in some way to increase its value or appeal to consumers. Examples of value-added fish products include
canned tuna, smoked salmon, breaded fish fillets, and marinated shrimp and some recipes made up of fish . These products often command higher prices than unprocessed fish and can be more
convenient for consumers to use in meals. Value-added fish products can also help to prolong the shelf life of fish and seafood, reducing waste and increasing the availability of these products to consumers.

"Nuts (especially chestnuts) represent an important source of income for silvo-pastoral communities
(considering that nuts, are typically located in mountainous areas), where intensive agriculture is not viable
in Albania, and alternative employment are few. Chestnuts represent the most important nut product in terms of production and international trade."

"Integrated farming is premised on the principle that farm returns can be maximized when two or more
production technologies are used together. This synergistic approach to agriculture, combining livestock

efficient exploitation of otherwise unutilized resources."

"Climate change can have significant effects on fish farming activities and the aquatic
organisms that are farmed. Rising water temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, floods, storms, ocean acidification, and changes in water quality can all impact the health and growth
of fish. These changes can also lead to changes in the distribution of fish species, and an
increase in the spread of diseases and pests. Fish farmers need to be aware of these potential
impacts and adapt their farming practices accordingly, such as by implementing strategies to
reduce the vulnerability of fish to disease, selecting species that are more tolerant to changing
climate conditions, and developing more efficient and sustainable farming practices."

"The field of fisheries offers a wide range of employment opportunities, including roles such as
fishermen or fisherwomen, fish farmers, fish processors, fishery biologists, marine resource
managers, sales and marketing professionals, research scientists, and fishery inspectors. These
roles involve different responsibilities such as operating fishing vessels, raising fish in
aquaculture operations, preparing and packaging seafood for distribution, studying fish
populations and habitats, developing policies to protect marine resources, promoting and
selling seafood products, conducting research on fisheries-related topics, and enforcing laws
and regulations related to fishing and the sale of seafood. The qualifications and experience
required for these roles vary, but many employers prefer candidates with experience or
education in a related field such as marine biology, fisheries science, or business."

"Freshwater aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms in freshwater environments. Various technologies are being developed and used to increase production and efficiency while
reducing environmental impact. These include Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), Indoor aquaculture, Biofloc systems, Smart aquaculture systems, and Integrated Multi-Trophic
Aquaculture (IMTA). These technologies can help farmers and entrepreneurs to increase the
efficiency and profitability of their operations while protecting the environment."

"fisheries in flood-prone areas can be highly vulnerable to the impacts of flooding. However, there are several strategies that can be implemented to help mitigate these impacts and support

forecasting and early warning systems, utilizing floodplains for aquaculture production, implementing integrated floodplain management, and providing alternative livelihood options
for fishing communities. By implementing a combination of these strategies, it is possible to
protect fisheries and support sustainable livelihoods in flood-prone areas."
