In a dramatic twist for the tech world, Polish programmer Przemyslaw Debiak, also known as “Psycho”, emerged victorious against an OpenAI model in a 10-hour coding marathon at the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 in Tokyo.
The contest, possibly the first major on-site world championship to pit elite human coders directly against AI, revolved around a single complex optimization problem. Debiak outmaneuvered the machine using clever, imperfect strategies, increasing his lead over the AI from 5.5% to 9.5%, despite being sleep-deprived and “barely alive.”
📣 Przemyslaw wrote on X:
“Humanity has prevailed (for now!) I had 10 hours of sleep in the last 3 days and I’m completely exhausted.”
While Przemyslaw took the crown, the AI model still outperformed other top-ranked human contestants, who had qualified through year-long rankings, highlighting how close machines are to surpassing elite human capabilities.
