AI Pulse: IBM's Latest Report Highlights Troubling Gaps In AI Security

A new study has revealed that of those surveyed, at least 13% of organizations reported breaches tied to their artificial intelligence (AI) models, thus sounding the alarm on the rising risks in AI governance.

The report, Cost of a Data Breach Report conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by IBM, also revealed that a staggering 97% of those lacked proper AI access controls.

🔐 Key Findings:

  • 60% of AI-related incidents involved compromised data.
  • 31% led to operational disruptions.
  • 63% of breached organizations had no AI governance policy or were still developing one.
  • 20% faced breaches due to shadow AI—unsanctioned, unmanaged AI systems.

💸 Financial Impact:

  • U.S. breach costs have reached a record $10.22 million, despite a global average decline to $4.44 million.
  • Extensive use of AI and automation in security saved organizations an average of $1.9 million and shortened breach lifecycles by 80 days.
  • Organizations relying on shadow AI suffered $670,000 more in breach costs compared to others.

💡 Strategic Concerns: IBM's Vice President of Security and Runtime Products, Suja Viswesan, warns:

“The cost of inaction isn't just financial, it's the loss of trust, transparency and control.”

Despite the mounting evidence, only 49% of breached organizations plan to invest further in security, and fewer than half of those will prioritize AI-driven solutions.

📉 Operational Fallout: Most affected organizations reported recovery timelines exceeding 100 days. Many also resorted to price hikes post-breach, with nearly one-third increasing costs by 15% or more.
