We're building a community of people around the idea that culture is a key part of strengthening local food systems and inspiring people to buy from local farmers. The purpose is to spark interest in food sovereignty through Middle Eastern foodways.  Our goal is to provide transformative experiences that build community through storytelling, collaboration and impactful action. We hold the values of:
 
- Stewardship of the Earth
- Mentorship and sharing knowledge
- Mental health and whole person development
- Education through demonstrating the value of soil and nature
- Prosperity creation through good works that benefit people and planet
 
Learning doesn’t need to take place in a formal setting. We encourage hands-on learning.  The educational materials here can be incorporated into gardening activities, projects, and other experiential learning opportunities. Activities might be part of after-school programs, internships, etc. but the materials here can also serve as stand-alone resources.  We will reward individuals who are active contributors with additional feedback, opportunities to connect, and special bonuses. Check https://go.osu.edu/mideast-food for further information.

Join Seeds of Middle Eastern Culture

Food sovereignty is about cultural heritage, health outcomes, sustainable agriculture, and how it all connects.  The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) and a community of researchers at Ohio State University have been engaged in food security topics and developing new ways of bridging authentic cultural experiences with food systems. The resources you will find here bring cultural knowledge of plants and food systems knowledge together.

Food Systems in the Middle East

The materials you will find here were produced for the Food Sovereignty Workshop held at the Ohio State University on October 13th and 14th 2022. "Community-Centered Approaches for Food Systems Transformation" focused on university-community partnerships and the importance of learning from communities about their local food systems, both historically and in the present moment while conducting research. Several communities involved in food sovereignty efforts were represented at the workshop in addition to 27 different units at Ohio State University. Speakers also represented Historically Black University, Central State, and Menominee Tribal College. Five government offices and 6 non-profit organizations were also represented. The food sovereignty workshop resulted in new connections between practitioner, government, and university networks. Contacts were made between urban farming and gardening organizations such as Growing and Growth Collective and Southside Family Farms, Bronzeville
