説明文

Nursing care for a bottle-feeding mother and infant involves ensuring proper feeding techniques, promoting bonding, practicing good hygiene, and understanding infant cues. Key aspects include holding the infant in a semi-upright position, keeping the bottle horizontal to prevent air intake, and making eye contact and talking during feeding to build a connection. Nurses should also teach the mother to burp the baby, watch for signs of fullness, and never prop the bottle or leave the baby unattended while feeding.

For the infant

  • Positioning:
Hold the baby in a semi-upright position with their head slightly tilted back. This prevents choking and allows for comfortable breathing and swallowing.
  • Bottle angle:
Keep the bottle horizontal or only slightly tipped so that the milk fills the nipple, which helps prevent the baby from swallowing air.
  • Pace:
Allow the baby to control the pace of the feed. Gently brush the nipple against the baby's lips, and wait for them to open their mouth wide before letting them draw the nipple in.
  • Burping:
Burp the baby two or three times during feedings to release swallowed air. Hold them in a sitting position on your lap or against your chest, and gently rub their back.
  • Signs of fullness:
Watch for cues that the baby is full, such as turning their head away, and stop feeding when they indicate they've had enough. Do not force them to finish the bottle.
  • Safety:
Never prop the bottle or leave the baby alone with a bottle to prevent choking.

For the mother

  • Bonding: Make the feeding a positive, bonding experience. Hold the baby close, look into their eyes, and talk to them during the feeding.
  • Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly before preparing and feeding the baby.
  • Comfort: Sit in a comfortable position with the baby close to your body.
  • Preparation: If using formula, follow the instructions carefully and never microwave bottles. Ensure the prepared milk or formula is at a safe temperature before feeding.
  • Support: Reassure the mother that bottle feeding can be a bonding experience and offer support, especially if she is also breastfeeding.

When to seek help

  • If you have questions about nipple size or how to hold the bottle.
  • If the baby has difficulty sucking or has signs of discomfort during feeding.
  • If you are concerned about the amount of milk your baby is consuming.
