This interview problem tests whether a candidate can extend a standard queue to support max() in efficient time, in addition to normal enqueue and dequeue operations. The goal is to design a queue that returns the maximum element quickly without scanning the entire structure.

In interviews, this problem evaluates:

Recognizing the need for an auxiliary structure, typically a monotonic deque

Maintaining the invariant that the deque stores candidates for the maximum in decreasing order

Correctly updating the deque on enqueue (discard dominated elements) and dequeue (remove if it leaves the queue)

Correct use of two pointers to expand and shrink the window

Maintaining character counts using a hash map / frequency array

Tracking when the window becomes valid (and when it stops being valid)

Avoiding off-by-one errors and incorrect count updates during contraction
