Descripción

Nursing care for infants with thrush focuses on administering prescribed antifungal medication, maintaining strict hygiene to prevent reinfection, and providing supportive care to ensure comfort and adequate feeding.

Medical Management

  • Antifungal Medication: A doctor will likely prescribe a liquid antifungal medicine (like Nystatin or Miconazole gel) to be applied to the white patches in the baby's mouth.
    • Follow the healthcare provider's instructions exactly, even if symptoms improve quickly, to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
    • For liquid medication, place half the dose in one cheek, then turn the baby's head to the other side and administer the rest. For gels, apply a small amount with a clean finger or cotton swab to the affected areas, avoiding the back of the throat to prevent choking.
    • Wait at least 30 minutes after application before feeding the infant.
  • Concurrent Treatment: If the mother is breastfeeding, both the mother (using an antifungal cream on the nipples) and the baby must be treated simultaneously to prevent passing the infection back and forth.

Hygiene and Prevention of Reinfection

  • Handwashing: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before and after caring for the infant, changing diapers, and applying medication.
  • Sterilization: Sterilize all items that go into the baby's mouth by boiling them for 5-10 minutes during the treatment period:
    • Bottle nipples and bottles
    • Pacifiers and teething rings
    • Breast pump parts that come into contact with breast milk
  • Laundry: Wash bibs, burp cloths, towels, and the mother's bras/reusable breast pads at a high temperature to kill the fungus.
  • Breastfeeding Hygiene:
    • Keep nipples clean and dry between feedings; air-dry them if possible.
    • Change disposable breast pads after each feed.
    • Avoid using breast milk expressed during an active infection at a later date, as freezing does not kill the yeast; use it during the treatment period.

Supportive Care

  • Feeding Management: Thrush can make feeding painful, causing the baby to be fussy or refuse to feed.
    • Offer smaller, more frequent feedings to ensure adequate hydration and nutrition.
    • If pain persists, consult a lactation consultant or healthcare provider for strategies to improve comfort and latch-on.
  • Diaper Rash Care: If the infant develops a yeast diaper rash, change diapers frequently, gently clean the area with warm water (avoiding wipes with alcohol), pat dry, allow the area to air out, and apply a prescribed antifungal or barrier cream.

If symptoms do not improve within 3-5 days of treatment or if the infant keeps getting thrush, contact a healthcare provider as this may indicate a more serious underlying issue.
