Working with newcomers in the US to navigate their new home and culture isn't simple - but it doesn't have to be difficult. And it doesn't require years of study, expensive credentials, or special skills to make a difference in their lives. It's more like friendship with a purpose.
Welcome Neighbor! is an introductory course designed for new tutors who are thinking of volunteering their time to support the development of English language and cultural fluency for adult refugees and immigrants in the US. The typical scenario is ongoing 1-1 online meetings for any level or background with a strong emphasis on community integration, everyday language use, and relationship development. It is non-academic and non-institutional. It requires a low barrier to entry for the tutor and the learner.
Basic Tech for Online Tutoring is the fourth step in the recommended course sequence, though people can choose their own adventure. By the end of this session, every participant will (if they choose) have What's App, Zoom, and Meet up and running, and the most basic ability to use them. It is designed for those who describe themselves as "tech challenged", though anyone is welcome. I can't guarantee you will survive the experience!
Warning: This is a practical, experiential workshop! Please register for this session when you are ready to use these tools. It's always free and you can retake it anytime.

Minimum Requirements for Successful Completion
When you successfully complete this session, you will have the tech tools you need to tutor English online. This session will not provide you proficiency or expertise with these tools! Proficiency requires practice. Expertise means proficiency with a high degree of skill (i.e., you can do some fancy tricks). Book a private session if you want indvidual support, or browse the other resources in the Ampersand Intercultural Training space.
